Shiganshina was the site of the initial breach that allowed Titans to flood into Wall Maria, forcing a massive evacuation. The area remained under Titan control for years until the Survey Corps launched an operation to reclaim Wall Maria. During this campaign, Armin Arlert came up with a plan to capture Bertolt but sustained severe burns. Levi saved Armin by injecting him with Titan serum instead of Erwin, allowing Armin to acquire the Colossal Titan's power after eating Bertolt. Later, it was revealed that the Walls are located on an island called Paradis, the last territory of Eldia. The district holds deep significance as the place where Eren's father killed the Reiss family and passed down the Founding Titan and Attack Titan powers by having Eren eat him.

In Their Own Story

The fall of Shiganshina began when a bearded Titan swallowed Eren Yeager during his first mission in Trost, though he soon reappeared as a 15-meter Titan fighting on equal ground. The district's strategic importance was highlighted when the Survey Corps revealed that ruling nobles would abandon Wall Rose should it be breached. In the final arc, Shiganshina became the burial site for Eren Yeager after Mikasa returned his head there to bury him under a tree where he used to nap. This tree eventually grew to resemble the one where Ymir first received her Titan power. The district witnessed the climax of the battle against Eren's forces, where Mikasa was forced to kill him to save humanity before returning to Shiganshina with his head.
